Are You a Newcomer to the World of Running? Be Sure to Avoid These 4 Mistakes

Getting the right amount of exercise is an essential part of staying healthy. With all of the different exercise options out there, choosing the right one is not nearly as easy as you think. For many people, running is the best form of exercise due to the level of convenience it can offer. If you are new to the world of running, then you will need to focus on avoiding mistakes. Each year, hundreds of people give up on running due to mistakes they make along the way. Sticking to this new exercise routine and using the Sane Solution program is a great way for you to get slim and trim. Here are some of the mistakes you need to avoid when beginning to run.

  1. Wearing Worn Out Shoes That Offer Zero Support

While you are running, a lot of strain will be put on your lower extremities. The key to avoiding injury during a run is wearing the right shoes. Some new runners think they can throw on a pair of old sneakers and hit the trail without problems, but this is not the case at all. Investing in a pair of quality running shoes will serve you well during your fitness journey. If you are not sure about what shoes you need or even what size you are, working with a knowledgeable supplier is a must. Going into a store that specializes in the sale of running shoes is a great idea. These professionals will be able to measure your foot to ensure you get the right size shoes. Once you have this information, you can try a few pair on to see which ones are the best fit for your needs.  (Many of those who follow my blog know I’m not a fan of rigid supportive shoes.  Finding a shoe that’s comfortable and allows your foot to function the way it was designed to is important.)

  1. Pushing Yourself Too Hard

If you are like most people, running is something you look forward each day. When first getting used to this form of exercise, you need to avoid pushing your body too hard. Overrunning is a huge problem and can lead to a number of injuries. Things like shin splints and runner’s knee are all injuries that can be caused by running too much. Being conservative with how long you run and how often you do this activity can serve you well in the long run. Increasing your weekly running mileage by no more than 10% is a great way to avoid overdoing it. You need to also give yourself a day or two break each week to allow your body to recuperate.

  1. Over striding can Be a Big Problem

Among the most common injury-causing mistake made by new runners is over striding. Pushing your stride to unhealthy limits will only lead to problems that can prohibit you from running altogether. Some new runners think that over striding will allow them to run faster, but this is not the case at all. When running, you need to avoid lunging forward with your feet. Ideally, your foot needs to land on mid-sole on every step you run. By paying attention to how you are landing, you will have no problem avoiding injuries caused by over striding.

  1. Failing to Drink Enough Water

When pushing your body to the limit while running, you have to replenish the water in your body. If you are running on a particularly hot day, you will sweat a great deal during your exercise. Failing to get enough water can lead to your cramping up during a run. About an hour before you begin running, you should consume around 16 to 24 ounces of water. As you traverse the running trails in your area, be sure to hydrate. By doing this, you can give your body the fuel it needs, you will have no problem getting your full run in without cramping up or feeling drained.

Newcomers to the world of running will need to pace themselves at first. Getting your body acclimated to this new form of exercise will make it easy to avoid injury.
