I’ve known Mark for the last 6 years and have learned a tremendous amount from his principals and philosophies. While teaching a running course with him in Florida, I remember one of the most important lessons he taught me. I explained that when I returned home from this course Inhad planned a 10 mile run at a pace that I wanted to run for an upcoming half marathon. I Explained it was a “test”. He asked, “how did you come up with this pace?”. This was my “goal” pace as I was aiming for a certain time. He advised for me to go and run an easy pace with my HR around 145 for two hours. “Let your body rest in the long runs and build the engine”, he explained. So I did. For the next 2 months I ran easy on my long runs. I ended up running 9 minutes under my goal finishing time. It worked. I have been training this way for the past 6 years now.
