Running tourism: How to stay safe on the road

As we all know, the health and fitness industry has changed immensely over the last few years. Once upon a time it might have involved running around a track for hours upon end – now, all sorts of hi-tech inventions and training types have come into the picture.

Well, if we stay on the topic of running for today, something that has become increasingly popular is running tourism. This is exactly as the name suggests; it involves jetting away and completing a run in a different country. This might be for a competition, or it might be to simply make the most of a different climate. The reasons are aplenty.

There are some health considerations to take into account, though. Through today’s piece, we will mull over some of the best tips to help you stay safe.

Travel insurance is a must

Sure, you might not be participating in an extreme sport – but that doesn’t matter. Whether you are completing a marathon or jetting off for a weekend of sunbathing, travel insurance is something that you shouldn’t ignore.

Over the years, there have been some horrific stories of travellers being left with huge bills after failing to take out insurance. Naturally, the elderly are even more at risk from this point of view when running, so consider a form of travel insurance when traveling in your 50s before you depart.

Be aware of the perils of plane dehydration

As a runner, you’ll know all about the importance of hydration and when you run on home soil, you’ll be completely equipped to deal with this.

However, as soon as you jump on a plane, the situation turns on its head. It is here when your dehydration levels sink again, for reasons discussed in this link.

Ultimately, if you are flying immediately before a run, make sure you arm yourself with plenty of water while you are in the sky. Take a 2-litre bottle and have regular drinks to ensure your body is prepared.

The same rules apply with food

Again, as you’ll know as a runner, your food is your energy. Unfortunately, unless you are lucky enough to travel in business class, the food on an airplane doesn’t tend to be up to much.

It means that already, as soon as you land, your body is lacking. The best way to combat this is to take your own food. Obviously, there are some limitations with this, but whether it is through nutrition bars or even fruit, just make sure you are carrying enough so that your body has sufficient resources for the run ahead.

Move around during the flight

You might be aiming to get through three movies through the course of the flight, but resist the urge to remain in your seat for the entire journey. Obviously, if this is a short-haul journey, sitting down for a couple of hours isn’t going to do you any harm.

For those longer trips, you need to treat your body accordingly though. This means getting up every hour or two to stretch your legs, and making sure that your feet are not becoming inflamed. This is something that is dangerous at the best of times, but when you are about to take on a long run in a different climate the risks are obviously even more severe.
