Many wonder why we get up at 4:45 on the last day of the weekend when we have the opportunity to sleep in and instead go out for a 20 mile run. I sometimes wonder myself but there is more to it then just getting up that early. Today was one of those days.
I didn’t get to be early last night (11:45) so when my alarm went off at 4:45am, it was a bit of a struggle to get out of my cozy bed that I was sharing with my daughter Jane (my wife made the deal to have Joe sleep in our bed with her!) I threw on my clothes that were laid on out my sink, applied my glide, put on my headlamp, grabbed a few leftover pancakes and headed out the door. Oh, and I stocked the mailbox with some Heed and a gel for the 2 hour mark. This morning I ran the first hour by myself listening to a service by Pastor Jeff Bogue from Grace Church in Bath, OH. At 6am I swung by Lee’s house to pick him up for an hour and a half. He was even more tired then me as a result of playing 36 holes of golf the previous day. Did I mention it rained all day yesterday! He handed me a Gatorade that lasted until we got back to my place where I swapped shoes. I had been running in a pair of Topo Athletic split toed shoes created by Tony Post, former CEO of Vibram FiveFingers. Stay tuned for a full review of these shoes real soon! I then put on a pair of Adidas Adipures and took off my headphones and headlamp. We ran until 7:30 then after dropping Lee off I ran back home for my Heed and Cliff gel. I Ran by myself for another 30 minutes then picked up my neighbor Paul for the final leg of my run.
I ended up completing a 20 mile run over 3 hours and 17 minutes. It was a slow pace but all of my long runs are done about a minute to a minute and a half slower then race pace.
Finishing up at 8:30, my wife Julie was waiting in the driveway where we tagged and she headed out with her friend Heather for a few miles.
It was a great way to start the day. Heard a church service, spent some time talking with my two friends, and got to enjoy a crisp, cool and clear morning. It was perfect. An ideal long Sunday run.
I finished up with a banana, pineapple, and almond milk smoothie and watched some Rick Smith Jr magic shows with my kiddos on the couch. Perfect!
Alright, gotta go get a refill of my coffee!!
